St. Matthew's as a Catholic School

Our motto is "Quaerite primum regnum dei" - "Seek first the Kingdom of God" - and our aim is to achive this motto in our school life. The whole ethos of the school is based on the teachings and practice of the Catholic Church.

The motivation for all purposeful activities within the daily life of our School Community springs from out whole hearted commitment to out School Mission Statment.

Our School Mission Statment

St. Matthew's is proud to be a Catholic School. This means that everything we aim to achieve will be based on the teachings and practice of the Catholic Church. We will work to build God's Kingdom and be happy together because we believe that Jesus died and rose again for us and that He is always present in our school and in our world.

In order to build God's Kingdom here at St. Matthew's we are going to:

  • Provide every pupil with the very best education while having regard for each one's individual needs.
  • Offer interesting, useful and well-planned lessons and learning experiences. These will reflect Catholic teaching and will give each pupil the chance to develop into a caring, thoughtful and confident young citizen.
  • Recognise that each one of us is special and of value simply because God created us and loves us. Therefore we will try always to respect each other and encourage each other to be peace-makers and friends. We will try hard to be truthful and honest and to be fair and forgiving.
  • We will encourage strong links with our parishes, our primary schools and our pupils' homes so that we can all work and grow together on our journey of faith.
  • We will make sure that we are able to offer support to each other when times are hard so that we can gain strength from each other, learn from the mistakes we make and gain the courage to face the problems we may meet from day to day. We will value all forms of prayer and celebration, especially Holy Mass. We will encourage everyone to join in and exercise their right to praise and worship God.
  • We will create opportunities for pupils and teachers to talk to each other about their concerns, their hopes and ideas so that we can work together in trust and confidence.
  • We will always recognise that our small community of St. Matthew's is part of a much wider community whose beliefs and ways of doing things may be different from ours.  We will always respect other peoples' differences and enjoy their gifts and talents.
